1. At what time do the banks open in Turkey?

Most banks are open from 09:00-12:30 and 13:30–17:00 hrs. Monday to Friday only.

2. What is the nearest place/grocery where we could get some snacks or beverages?

Just 20 m. from Meroddi Bağdatlıyan is a small grocery (called “Koşar Gıda”) where you could find cigarettes, local newspapers, alcoholic drinks and snacks. It is on No. 10A, Otçu Sokak.

However, there is a “Migros Jet” supermarket (on 17A, Büyük Hendek Caddesi) where you could find more varieties and dedicated sections.

And the nearest greengrocery where you could get some fruits or vegetables is on No. 3, Küçük Hendek Caddesi. It is called “Galata Manavı.”

3. What is the best place around to drink wine?

“Solera Winery” at No. 44, Yeni Çarşı Street in Tomtom Mahallesi is a nice wine coffee where there are over hundreds of varieties of wine with 30 of these imported. The place offer nice dishes as well. You can even take away your wine, which gets you a 25 per cent discount.

“Sensus Wine House” is a closer option. It is on No 5. Büyük Hendek Street. Sensus is a place with nice ambiance. However, it sometimes gets so crowded that you have to hunt down the waiters each time you wish to order something.

4. Is there any information office around?

There are several Tourism Information Offices all over Istanbul where you can get some help regarding travel information. All these offices have maps and guides in different languages. 5. How close are you to the theatres and entertainment venues?

İstiklal Street -that is just 200 m away from our hotels- hosts not only restaurants, clothing stores and galleries, but also theatres, movie theatres and art galleries. The 1.400 meter-long street has also a rather new shopping mall called “Demirören AVM” (No: 50 İstiklal Street). The Cinema Pink on the third floor of the mall has several movie theatres featuring the latest film releases.

6. How can I get to Galata Tower on foot?

Constructed in 1348 and remained tallest structure of the city for centuries, Galata Tower is just 250 m. from Meroddi Bağdatlıyan. To get to the Galata Tower, turn left and go down the İlk Belediye Street, and take the firs left onto Küçük Hendek Street that will take you right to the Tower Square. The tower dominating the skyline north of the Golden Horn is rising just in front of you. However, since the queues can be long and the viewing balcony can get overcrowded, we recommend you to climb the steep steps of the Galata Tower as early as 09:00 o’clock.

7. Where can I get an Istanbulkart?

Istanbulkart is an RFID "smart card” to be used with some discount in Istanbul’s public transport system. This credit card-sized electronic tag could be easily purchased and used for boarding city buses, subway, funiculars, LRT, commuter trains, ferryboats and trams. It is sold by Istanbulkart vending machines (called “Electronic Card Point of Sale”) and by the commercial kiosks (little stands that sell newspapers, cigarettes, chewing gum, etc.) near major transit stops such as the airport, Eminönü, Sultanahmet, Beyazıt, Taksim Square. To buy an Istanbulkart, you need to pay a non-refundable 10 TL fee (for the actual card and the service), and of course and amount of your choice to load onto the card. Cards can be recharged at refill machines (“dolum noktası”) at metro stations, bus stations and major ferry docks. Please note that cash payment on the public transport system of Istanbul is not possible.

8. How can I get to the nearest metro station?

The nearest station (to our hotel) for the Istanbul’s M2 underground railway network is Şişhane. Luckily, all Meroddi Hotels are within very close proximity of Şişhane metro station. From Meroddi Bağdatlıyan Hotel, you will have to walk just about 250 m. Just cross the street, go through the ground floor of multi-storey Car Park, and turn right when you pass by the coffee shop (Kahve Dünyası). And the Şişhane subway entrance is only 50 m. away on the way.
